About the Course
Course Outline: Beginning patchwork, or already have some skill? This is the course for you! This is a patchwork and quilting class for beginners to intermediate patch-workers to learn new skills or further develop their skills in hand or machine patchwork and quilting. Work at your own pace in relaxed and friendly atmosphere, to create a cushion cover or lap quilt using simple shapes like squares, triangles, rectangles or hexagons. Work on a class project or your own traditional or modern patchwork design.
Learn: You will learn about the parts of a quilt, preparing and cutting fabric; patchwork techniques including: English Paper Piecing, Strip Patchwork, and Braiding; how to construct a modern or traditional patchwork design and how to create a quality finish on your project.
Equipment:
Fabric, batting, backing fabric as required for your pattern
Thread to match
Hand Sewing Needles
Berry or Glass Head pins (long and sharp)
Tape measure which displays inches
Fabric scissors
Seam ripper
Sewing Machine and bobbins with walking foot, if you have one(if machine sewing your project)
The following items are available in small quantities; you may like to bring your own for easy access:
1 self-healing cutting mat
12 inch Quilters Ruler
1 rotary cutter
Marking pens,
Quilter’s safety pins
Patchwork Patterns: there are a few available in the course and there are many free patterns online. Riley Blake have a selection of well written free patterns which can be easily downloaded, as do many other designers.

Your Instructor
Judith Yalden
Judith completed teacher training in 1983 and has been teaching Textiles and Design in NSW high schools since 1984. She also completed an Applied Fashion Design and Technology Certificate in 2012 and Surface Pattern and Design training in 2022.
She has created garments and other textile works for stores in Sydney and private customers.
Judith’s areas of expertise include Patchwork, Applique, and Quilting; Pattern making, soft furnishings, fabric printing and dyeing and Embroidery (especially Counted Thread techniques). Originally trained in traditional techniques, Judith has explored a wide range of modern techniques, enjoys working with bright colours and is inspired by flora and traditional and cultural designs.
