About the Course

In this 5-week course, we will be using the authentic Urushi lacquer as adhesive, filler and undercoat of golden powder. Each step will be taken slowly and gently, customised according to the piece you work on. The course fee does not include materials which can be purchased from Sayoko. A list of materials and prices is attached below.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • How to assess the repair procedure and methods.

  • Mixing adhesive and filler by using Urushi lacquer.

  • Shaping and polishing the filler, drawing the undercoat lines.

  • Treating the golden powder in particular way to complete.


PLEASE BRING

  • Up to two pieces of broken/chipped/cracked pottery or porcelain. For those who find no broken pieces but wish to learn the skills, you are welcome to join the class. I willgladly provide some porcelain pieces for you.

NOTE: If broken, no more than into 4 pieces.

              A chipped area to be less than 5c coin.

              No glass, wood or metal items at this stage

  • An apron or please wear clothes that can get stained.


NOTE: Please be aware that the natural Urushi lacquer rarely yet has caused skin irritation. Gloves will be supplied.



The Materials and Cost

   1. All tools to rent for $15 OR can be purchased separately if desired

  •  Wooden sculpture knives : $15/set of 10 knives 

  •  Spatulas to mix : $10/spatula 

  •  3 kinds of brushes : $15/brush

  •  Silk balls : $10/person

  •  Working board : Free

  •  Mixing palette : $5/palette

  2. Materials

  • Various coloured mica powder : $5/person  (If pure gold is preferred: $ 25/0.1g)

  • Raw Urushi lacquer : $5/ person

  • Black & Red Urushi : $3/person


  • Polishing powder Tonoko : $2/person

          Total materials/person : $15 

The total cost of tools and materials/person: $30 if not purchasing tools. Additional $20 if pure gold is preferred.
